Fishes to catch
There is quite a difference in big game fishing in the north or the south of Aruba. Mostly the north is much rougher and better for more experienced fishers.
The change of catching specific deap sea or bottum fish depends on the period of the year, see also the fish calander. But keep in mind fishing is fishing, if they are there we will catch them.
Find below more information of the fishes you might catch and their specifications.
Barracuda
One of the most catched fish on Aruba. From 1 to 30 pounds. A big barracuda can be 4 ft. The white meat is very tasty. The teeth of barracuda are spread througout his mouth. They swim in groups. It is an easy catch, they are not real fighters.
King fish
Also called mackarel is a carefull fish. As big as a wahoo, hooking him is not easy. The swim all around the island. If you catch it you’ll have something special. We caught them within 500 feet of the shore, with a nice fight.
Wahoo
A torpedo with razor sharp teeth that is the best description. It often attacks from below and cuts the ballayoo baitfish in two pieces. 20 – 30 pounds 4 ft long is a normal size to catch. They often swim in groups. The boat often turns around to catch more of them. They swimm all around the island.
Dolphin/Mahi Mahi
Other names are dolphin or dorade. One of the most beautiful fishes in the sea. A color spectrum of green, blue and gold. It has the nose of a submarine. They swim in small groups with one male and several females. If you hook the male, it possible to catch the females as wel, the will stay at his side untill he is out of the water. To see them jump and fight is really spectacular. We catched once a 45 pound male. The locals love to eat this fish, they use everything of it for soup and filet.
Tuna
The strongest fish to catch. The tuna is one big muscle, it hunts all day. If you catch a small tuna of 40 pounds it already feels like whale. The big tuna’s of 100 pounds and more are hard to find these days, thanks to the commercial trawlers. They often disappear in the deep when they are hooked. We hope that you have strong arms, you will need them.
Sail fish
One of the fastest fishes in the ocean, they swimm up to 50 miles per hour. The can be catched with special gear. The fisherman not often look for sailfish because the are uneatable and it is catch and release. But if you asked and tip them, they will go for it. 60 pounds is a normal weight for a sailfish.
Blue Marlin
The record on aruba is above 1000 pounds. The fish of fishes is the most spectecular fish to catch. It takes most of the times more then one hour to bring it in.It is always released on aruba. It swims in deeper water like 700 ft or more. Only to catch with special teasers and bait.
You find him mostly on the north side of aruba.
White Marlin
The smarter and smaller brother of the Blue. Very hard to catch, marcelino catched several. 180 pounds is normal for the white Marlin. It is also very tough to bring it in. It jumps meters out of the water.
Shark
Nurse, reef and bull sharks are found on the north side of the island. They can vary in lenght en weight, from small to very big and are not commonly catched. Somethimes when you have a smaller fish hooked, they will steal it from you. Then you notice that they are there. They simply bite your catch in to pieces.
